Withdrawal Management Unit

Withdrawal Management Unit

Withdrawal Management Unit (WMU) is a non-medical detoxification programme that is available to both men and women over 18 years of age at CHRC. People who are actively using alcohol and/or drugs may qualify for a 5-7 day stay in WMU. Detoxification is the period of time (lasting from a few days to several weeks) when the body returns its systems to a normal state after drug and/or alcohol use and toxins are cleared from the body. It is typically the first step in recovery and helps people make contact with other treatment resources. CHRC staff provides careful monitoring in a residential setting during non-medical detox.

In order for an individual to find out if he or she is eligible for admission to WMU, the individual must call CHRC at 947-9992 or 925-9992 and complete a phone screening. Some conditions may require a medical clearance from a physician prior to admission in WMU due to potential risks associated with detoxification. During a WMU admission, people have the opportunity to focus on rest, self-care and wellness as they detox from substances. Assessments may be completed to determine the best course of treatment and to identify referral services that may be beneficial. Admission to WMU is voluntary, and individuals can access WMU as self-referrals, referral by a physician or other health care professional, or by the court system.
